Moving day is chaotic enough—don’t let a cleaning panic derail your final exit. A well-thought-out move out cleaning checklist keeps you from re-cleaning spots you already did and helps you protect your security deposit. You don’t need a professional crew; block out a morning or afternoon, and work through it room by room.

What You’ll Need

Gather everything first so you don’t lose momentum running to the store. Most of these are probably under your sink already:

  • All-purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, and a degreasing spray
  • Baking soda and white vinegar for stubborn spots
  • Microfiber cloths, a scrub brush or sponge, and a magic eraser
  • Toilet brush, mop, bucket, and vacuum with attachments
  • Large trash bags and a box for donations

Room-by-Room Checklist

Kitchen

Start with the areas that collect grease, then finish with counters and the sink.

  • Clean the oven inside and out, including racks and drip pans. Use a heavy-duty degreaser and let it sit for 20 minutes before scrubbing.
  • Pull out and wipe down the refrigerator, plus the area behind and underneath. Landlords check the freezer drawer too.
  • Wipe cabinet fronts, especially around handles. Clean the microwave inside and out, and sprinkle baking soda in the dishwasher, then run a short hot cycle to deodorize it.
  • Scrub the sink with baking soda, rinse well, and finish with a streak-free shine on fixtures.

Bathroom

Bathrooms need two passes: first for soap scum and grime, then a final swipe for drips and streaks.

  • Clean the toilet bowl, rim, outer surfaces, and the floor behind the base.
  • Scrub the tub or shower walls with a nonabrasive cleaner. For hard water buildup, saturate a cloth with white vinegar, let it sit for 30 minutes, then scrub.
  • Wipe mirrors with glass cleaner, then clean the vanity, faucet, and drawer fronts. Don’t forget the toothbrush holder and shelf corners.

🧽 Note: If you have hard water, test the showerhead and glass door before cleaning day. Thick mineral scale needs extra time and a dedicated lime remover.

Living Spaces and Bedrooms

These rooms are about details: dust, walls, and floor edges.

  • Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures, and window sills. Wipe window tracks with a damp cloth.
  • Check walls for smudges and scuffs. A magic eraser works on many marks—use it gently so you don’t take off paint.
  • Vacuum twice: once normally, then slowly along edges and under vents. Use attachments on baseboards and radiators.
  • Wipe doors, door frames, and switch plates, which catch grime that vacuums miss.

If your lease requires professional carpet cleaning, book it before your final walk-through so you don’t pay for it twice.

Final Walk-through

Before you close the door, do a slow tour pretending you’re the landlord. Open closets and cabinets, peek under sinks, and look at ceilings for cobwebs. Carry a flashlight—it will reveal greasy fingerprints and smudges you missed in daylight.

You don’t have to leave every inch spotless; “broom clean” is the standard for many leases. Still, going a little further shows care and helps you avoid surprises when the security deposit arrives.

Once the last bag goes out, take a photo of each empty room as proof of the condition. Then breathe easy—you’ve done your part.
