Few hairstyles rescue a bad hair day as reliably as a slick back. When frizz or limp strands won’t cooperate, this smooth, pulled-back style still reads as polished. If you’ve ever wondered how to do a slick back at home, the answer comes down to the right product, a careful comb, and a few extra minutes.

What to Have on Hand

  • A wide-tooth comb for detangling
  • A fine-tooth comb for smoothing
  • Strong-hold gel or pomade — gel gives a glossy, wet finish; pomade gives softer shine and a little more movement
  • A no-snag elastic hair tie
  • A light-hold hairspray

The Steps

  1. Start with slightly damp hair. Damp hair lies flatter and helps the product spread evenly. If your hair is dry, spritz it lightly with water and towel-squeeze once. If it’s freshly washed, wait until it’s no longer dripping.
  2. Apply a small amount of product. Rub a nickel-size amount of gel or pomade between your palms, then smooth your hands over your hair from the front hairline to the nape of your neck. The goal is an even coat, not a heavy smear. You can always add more, but it’s hard to remove excess once it’s in.
  3. Comb it back in two passes. First use the wide-tooth comb to remove any snarls. Then switch to the fine-tooth comb, starting at your hairline and combing straight back toward the nape. Keep the comb close to your scalp, but don’t press so hard that it leaves marks.
  4. Gather it into a low ponytail or bun. Pull the hair together at the nape of your neck or just below the crown, depending on your preference. Smooth the top once more, then wrap the elastic around the base. For a bun, twist the ponytail, coil it around the base, and tuck the end under the elastic.
  5. Press out bumps. Place both palms flat against the top of your head and press gently for about five seconds. This flattens the crown and gives the style that sleek, close-to-head silhouette. Use the fine-tooth comb to smooth any ridges around the hairline.
  6. Set it with hairspray. Hold the can about eight to ten inches from your head and mist lightly. If you used a high-shine gel, you can skip this step or just spray the sides and baby hairs.

💡 Note: If you see bumps forming as the product dries, don’t add more water or gel. Lightly dampen your palms and press over the bump for ten seconds — the gentle moisture and heat will flatten it without disturbing the rest of the style.

Give yourself one or two practice runs on a low-stakes weekend. Once you find the right amount of product and the right comb, a slick back becomes one of the fastest styles you’ll own — and it holds up through meetings, dinners, and warm afternoons.
