Some Halloween pumpkins are simple grinning jack-o’-lanterns, but if you’re aiming for a Nightmare Before Christmas vibe, the character to beat is Oogie Boogie. A printable Oogie Boogie pumpkin template turns his lopsided burlap face into a doable weekend project, even if you’ve never carved a stencil before. No template usually means freehanding his features, and that’s how you end up with one eye gazing at the porch and the other at the mailbox.

Why a template helps

The face looks chaotic, but it’s actually a study in placement. That’s where a good template steps in — it marks the stitched seam, places the eyes at a pleasingly creepy tilt, and keeps the wide grin from veering sideways. The pattern is designed to fit a pumpkin circumference of about 18 to 22 inches, which covers the typical carving pumpkin sold at grocery stores and patches.

You can find this style of stencil at most craft retailers and free printable archives online. Look for a clear PDF with a front view, solid black shapes, and light cutting lines. Avoid heavily shaded patterns, since shading is hard to cut through on a curved pumpkin.

What to gather

  • A printable Oogie Boogie template (printed at 100% scale on plain paper)
  • One smooth, round pumpkin in the 10–20 pound range
  • Painter’s tape or clear tape
  • A fine-tip permanent marker or a ballpoint pen
  • A serrated carving knife or pumpkin-carving kit
  • A metal skewer or wood poker (for transferring dots)
  • Small and large ribbon scrapers (for sculpting away layers)

How to use the template

Before you start, make sure your pumpkin is clean, dry, and resting on a flat surface. Tape the paper template flat against the front. If the pumpkin curves a lot, gently cut small notches in the paper so it wraps around without tearing.

  1. Trace the entire face with a permanent marker. Press lightly at first, then go back over the lines once you see they line up.
  2. Set the paper aside. Inside each cut-out area (like the eyes and mouth), use your poker to prick through the pumpkin skin in a light dot pattern. This transfers the design a bit deeper than the marker line.
  3. Use the tip of your carving knife to make one clean cut through the skin along your tracing. Follow the printed edge in one continuous motion. For tricky corners, push the knife slowly and twist slightly to finish the turn.
  4. Push each piece out gently from behind, leaving the pumpkin rind intact. Don’t force a stubborn piece — trim one edge with a small sawing motion instead.
  5. For the burlap seam effect, scrape a thin ribbon of flesh away along the template’s stitch line. This raised line will catch porch light beautifully without cutting all the way through.

If your template doesn’t match the printable instructions (some include burst marks or cut-order numbers), keep the large shapes for last so the pumpkin stays sturdy. The narrow stitched seam is best done as a shallow scrape rather than a full cut.

🎃 Note: Real pumpkins begin shrinking within two days once carved. If you want Oogie Boogie to last weeks, use a faux foam pumpkin and transfer the same pattern with carbon paper, then cut with a craft knife.

A stenciled pumpkin still benefits from a simple string of warm lights behind it. That slight flicker softens the face and adds a shadowy depth that makes Oogie Boogie feel like he’s about to slip into a jitterbug. Aim to carve no more than two days before Halloween for the crispest grin.
