Laundry Tag Symbols

Laundry Tag Symbols

Standing in front of the washing machine with a new sweater, you lift the tag and see a row of tiny pictograms. Laundry tag symbols are the standardized language on clothing labels that explains how to wash, dry, bleach, iron, and dry-clean each piece without relying on words. Once you know the five core shapes, you can decode almost any care label in seconds.

The five symbol families

Every care label uses symbols drawn from five base shapes. A tub is for washing, a triangle for bleach, a square for drying, an iron for pressing, and a circle for professional dry-cleaning. The add-ons stay consistent, too: dots set heat, bars under the tub set the cycle, and an X through any shape is the code’s way of saying “skip this step.”

Washing: the tub

The washtub is the most common place to start. A number inside is the maximum water temperature the fabric can handle, in Celsius: 30 for cold, 40 for warm, 60 for hot. A hand reaching into the tub means hand-wash. One line underneath says choose the permanent-press cycle, which helps reduce wrinkles; two lines say choose the gentle or delicate cycle. An X drawn over the whole tub means do not wash the item in water.

Bleach and drying

Bleach decisions use a triangle. An empty triangle means any bleach is safe when needed; a triangle with diagonal lines means non-chlorine bleach only; a triangle with an X means no bleach at all.

Drying uses the square family. A square with a circle inside means machine drying is fine. Dots inside the circle indicate heat: one dot is low, three is high. If an X crosses the whole dryer symbol, skip the tumble dryer. A square with a horizontal line through the middle means dry flat—a smart method for knits.

Ironing and dry-cleaning

With the iron symbol, dots set the temperature: one dot for low, two for medium, three for high. An X across the iron means don’t press it at all.

The circle represents the dry cleaner’s trade. A circle, plain or holding a letter, means dry-cleaning is allowed; the letter tells your cleaner which solvent to use. An X through the circle means no dry-cleaning.

🧺 Note: When a tag says “dry clean only,” follow it. Water can permanently shrink or distort fabrics like viscose and some wools, so that small circle deserves your trust.

Next time you bring home a new favorite, spend the extra few seconds to scan the tag before it lands in the basket. The symbols are easier than they look: find the base shape, notice any dots, and respect each X. When in doubt, choose the gentlest route—cool water, delicate cycle, and low heat—and your clothes will come out looking much closer to the day you bought them.
