How To Wrap Gifts

A gift bag is practical, but accepting a present that’s been wrapped with care feels entirely different. Learning how to wrap gifts doesn’t require talent—it requires a clean table, sharp scissors, and a simple folding order. Follow this method for any rectangular box, and you’ll get crisp corners that make the recipient pause before tearing in.

What You’ll Need

  • Wrapping paper—enough to wrap around the box, overlap by about ½ inch, and leave a 2–3 inch tail at each open end
  • Sharp scissors
  • Double-sided tape or clear tape with a dispenser
  • A ruler or straight edge for crisp creases
  • Ribbon, twine, or a bow, if you like

The Simple Method

  1. Measure and cut. Set the box upside-down in the center of the paper, pattern side down. Bring one long edge of the paper up and over the box until it meets the other edge; check that the overlap is about ½ inch. At the two short ends, you should have roughly the same amount of extra paper as the box’s height. If not, unroll more and cut cleanly.
  2. Tape the main seam. Pull the two long edges together on the bottom of the box, overlap them, and place tape along the centerline. Turn the box over so that seam is underneath—you’ll see only smooth paper on top.
  3. Fold the first end. Look at one short side. Press the paper from the left and right sides inward toward the box; the excess will naturally form two triangular flaps. Fold them flat against the box, then fold the bottom flap up over the box’s end and tape it. Fold the top flap down so it meets the bottom, tape again.
  4. Repeat on the other short end. Same motion: pinch, tuck the side triangles flat, fold up the bottom, fold the top over it, and tape.
  5. Sharpen the edges. Once both ends are closed, flip the box so the seam is on the table. Use your fingernail or the flat edge of a ruler to crease each outer edge. This last step is what gives gift wrap that “store-bought” look.

🎀 Note: If you hate seeing tape lines, use double-sided tape. Place it just inside the paper’s fold before pressing the seam or flap together—the tape disappears, and the wrapping looks seamless.

Wrap one gift this way and you’ll notice how quickly the rhythm clicks. Start with a smaller box if you’re unsure, and don’t stress about perfection—a gently creased corner plus a light trimming of ribbon reads as “intentional.” That’s the real trick to wrapping gifts: not flawless paper, but the message in the fold.
