Some outfits leave no room for a bra. When a backless dress or an off-shoulder top calls for a bare look, breast tape can give you a smooth, supported shape without visible straps. Learning how to tape breasts safely comes down to two things: choosing a medical-grade adhesive and prepping your skin properly.
What You’ll Need
Look for tape made for skin, such as kinesiology tape or fashion tape labeled “body tape.” Avoid duct tape, clear packaging tape, or stiff sports tape — their adhesives are too aggressive and can blister or tear delicate chest skin.
- Body or kinesiology tape — enough for 2–3 strips per side
- Nipple covers or small, round adhesive bandages
- Scissors with rounded tips for cutting strips
- Baby oil, mineral oil, or cleansing balm for removal
Prep Your Skin
Clean your chest with gentle soap and water, then dry it completely. Lotion, powder, or perfume residue will weaken the adhesive and make the tape slip by mid-afternoon. If your skin is sensitive, do a quick patch test on your inner arm first.
The Basic Taping Method
Practice once before the actual occasion. Tape should hold your breast in a natural, comfortable position — it is not meant to hoist or over-lift. When in doubt, use less tension rather than more.
- Cut your strips. You will likely need two per breast. Cut each strip long enough to reach from the outer edge of your breast, near your armpit, to the center of your chest. Round the corners with scissors so the edges lie flat and don’t peek out from clothing.
- Protect the nipple. Place a nipple cover or a small round bandage over the nipple and the darker area around it. Never put adhesive directly on these sensitive spots.
- Apply the lower strip. Lean slightly forward and use one hand to lift and support your breast. With the other hand, anchor the tape just under the outer edge of your breast, then smooth it along the undercurve toward the center of your chest. Keep the first and last inch of tape free of stretch so the ends stay comfortable.
- Add the support strip. Starting below the outer part of the breast, angle a second strip diagonally upward across the chest toward where a bra strap would sit. This creates a gentle “sling” feel. If you see red grooves or feel pinching, remove and retry with less pull.
- Smooth and wait. Run your palm over the tape to press it firmly into place, then wait 10–15 minutes before dressing. Body heat helps the adhesive bond.
✂️ Note: The right angle depends on your neckline. For a plunge top, angle the top strip slightly inward toward your collarbone; for a backless dress, angle it outward toward your shoulder. Test a few directions in private to see what feels secure.
Removing Tape Without Hurting Your Skin
Never pull tape off dry. Take a warm shower first to soften the adhesive, then saturate the top edge with baby oil or cleansing balm. Hold your skin taut with one hand and peel the tape back over itself very slowly, adding more oil as you go.
Once the tape is off, gently wash the area and apply a fragrance-free moisturizer to soothe the skin. Any sticky residue will dissolve with another dab of oil.
Tape works beautifully for a few hours of wear, but it is not a substitute for a supportive bra — very full-busted or sensitive bodies may need two layers or extra tape. Still, with a little patience and a fresh roll in your bag, it can be the difference between tugging at your neckline and actually enjoying the evening.
