How To Get Tanner

How To Get Tanner

Your calendar says rooftop party, but your skin still thinks it’s midwinter. If you’re wondering how to get tanner without the UV damage, self-tanner is the practical answer. Choose a buildable formula, prep your skin well, and you’ll get a smooth, believable glow in about a day.

What You’ll Need

Look for a self-tanner with a guide color—the temporary bronze tint that shows where you’ve applied—so you don’t miss spots. Then gather the rest:

  • Self-tanning mousse or lotion with a guide color
  • A tanning mitt
  • A body scrub or exfoliating mitt
  • Oil-free body moisturizer
  • Loose, dark pajamas or sweatpants

How to Self-Tan at Home

  1. Exfoliate and shave 12 to 24 hours beforehand. Pay extra attention to knees, elbows, and ankles. This gives your skin time to recover, so the color grabs evenly instead of settling into dry patches or razor bumps.
  2. Take a quick lukewarm shower before applying. Rinse off any leftover lotion, then pat your skin completely dry. Wait 10 minutes before moving on—self-tanner needs a bone-dry canvas.
  3. Smooth a little oil-free moisturizer over the driest spots: knees, elbows, ankles, and the tops of feet. A light layer is enough; too much can create a barrier that repels the tanner.
  4. Apply self-tanner with the mitt. Pump or squeeze the product onto the mitt, not directly onto your skin. Start at your ankles and sweep upward in long, circular strokes, working one section at a time. Use thin layers; you can always build more color, but it’s hard to erase too much.
  5. Blend tricky spots with a lighter hand. When you reach knees and elbows, bend the joint slightly and use the nearly dry edge of the mitt. Finish the backs of your hands and the tops of your feet with the leftover residue so those areas don’t turn out darker than the rest.
  6. Wait, then rinse. Give the tanner 8 to 10 minutes to dry before dressing. For the most even finish, sleep in loose, dark clothing and rinse in the morning with lukewarm water and no soap. Your color will keep developing over the next few hours.

🧴 Note: Self-tanner does not protect you from the sun. If you’re heading outdoors once it has fully developed, apply sunscreen as you normally would.

Your tan will fade gradually over about five days. Help it fade gracefully by moisturizing daily and going easy on exfoliation until the color starts to look patchy—then it’s time for another light coat. And if one spot looks a little streaky, remember that most people are admiring the overall glow, not inspecting your elbows up close.
