Concealer Or Foundation First

Concealer Or Foundation First

Standing in front of the mirror, concealer in one hand and foundation in the other, most of us have asked the same question: concealer or foundation first? There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Your choice comes down to the type of base you’re using, the coverage you want, and how much time you have.

Concealer first vs. foundation first

There are two schools of thought among makeup artists, and both orders can look lovely. The deciding factor is usually your foundation formula. Here’s how the two approaches compare:

FactorConcealer firstFoundation first
Pairs best withSheer, lightweight bases like tinted moisturizers, BB creams, or skin tintsMedium-to-full-coverage liquid foundations
Why it worksThe sheer base glides over concealer and blends its edges for a fresh, no-makeup makeup finishFoundation evens most of your skin tone first; concealer then covers only what’s left
Main riskDragging or buffing too hard can lift the concealer before the base setsLayering too much concealer over already-covered spots can look thick
Best forDewy, natural-looking days and anyone who likes “my skin but smoother”Busy mornings, everyday wear, and blemishes or dark circles that need spot coverage

💡 Note: Color correctors are the exception. Peach or orange counteracts dark circles; green neutralizes redness. If you use one, apply it before foundation, wait a few seconds, then follow with foundation and a thin layer of concealer.

How to choose your order

If your foundation is medium to full coverage, apply foundation first. It will even out most of your face on its own, so the concealer can go exactly where a little shadow or redness remains. You’ll use less product overall, and your makeup will look lighter and last longer.

If your base is sheer, like a skin tint or tinted moisturizer, switch the order. These formulas aren’t meant to cover much, so apply concealer to the spots that need it first, then pat the sheer base over everything. The base softens the concealer’s edges and helps the whole look read as naturally yours.

Whatever order you choose, wait a minute or two after moisturizer and sunscreen before applying any makeup. That short pause helps both layers stay put and makes blending easier.

Still feeling uncertain? Pull out tomorrow’s base and let it decide: medium-to-full coverage means foundation first; a sheer or tinted formula means concealer first. After that, it’s just practice — and having both orders in your toolkit means you’ll always have a plan the next time you’re standing at the mirror.
