Apt Move In Checklist

Apt Move In Checklist

You’ve just unlocked your new apartment. The rooms echo, the boxes are still in the hallway, and suddenly the to-do list feels enormous. That’s why this apt move-in checklist is short and practical: do the things that protect you now, then settle in at your own speed.

Find the shut-offs and test the alarms

Spend the first fifteen minutes locating the main water valve, the breaker panel, and the gas shut-off if your unit has one. Test the circuit breakers one by one—labels in empty apartments are often wrong—and take a photo with your phone so you’ll remember which is which.

Check the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. If they’re battery-operated and you can’t confirm when the batteries were changed, replace them now. Then press the test button on each one.

Sort out the lock situation

Ask the landlord whether you can rekey or replace the deadbolt. If yes, schedule a locksmith before you start sleeping there and give the landlord a copy of the new key. If no, submit a written request for new locks; it’s a normal privacy request, not a demanding one.

Document the condition before you unpack

Take a slow video of every room, saying today’s date at the start. Then photograph every scuff, crack, nail hole, and stained cabinet shelf. Email the video and photos to the landlord or property manager within 48 hours.

Run all faucets, flush each toilet, turn on the oven and the disposal, and open the windows. If something needs a repair, you want that record now, not at move-out.

📷 Note: Include your apartment number in the subject line of the email and copy yourself. If the deposit is ever questioned, you’ll have the evidence.

Clean the empty rooms first

Empty cabinets are quicker to clean than full ones. Wipe inside the kitchen cabinets and drawers with warm, soapy water, then go after doorknobs, light switches, the fridge handle, and the bathroom. A product labeled disinfectant must sit wet for the time on the bottle before you wipe it; most need several minutes.

Bedrooms can wait. This sweep is about food contact and high-touch surfaces, not making baseboards sparkle.

Plan for the first 24 hours

Check your lease for the utilities that are in your name, and schedule them to start today if you haven’t. Call the internet provider now if you haven’t; many apartments require a technician visit several days out.

Before you lose daylight, collect the things you’ll need for the first night and keep them in one basket.

  • Bedding and one towel per person
  • Toiletries and any prescriptions
  • A phone charger and a power strip
  • One pan, one bowl, one mug, and utensils
  • A change of clothes for the next day

You don’t have to finish everything today. If you leave with working locks, a tested smoke alarm, and a documented walkthrough, you’ve already done the hard part. The boxes will still be there tomorrow—but now they’ll be there in a safer, cleaner apartment.
