Affinity Designer Illustration Masterclass

When I first started prepping vector assets for animation, I quickly realized how unforgiving file structures can be. If you're exploring a 29+ Affinity Designer Motion Graphics Afdesign workflow, you already know that organizing complex vector rigs is half the battle. Affinity Designer doesn't have a native timeline, but it absolutely shines when it comes to prepping assets for motion graphics. The trick is understanding how to build your files so they survive the export process.

Why Affinity Designer Excels at Motion Prep

Here’s the thing: most motion designers default to Illustrator, but I’ve found Affinity Designer’s handling of boolean operations and layer independence far more intuitive for rigging. When you build characters or UI elements in an .afdesign file, every sub-layer can act as an independent asset. That said, you have to be deliberate about how you group things. If you rely too heavily on live effects like drop shadows or glows, those won’t translate cleanly when you export to SVG or PSD for animation.

Exporting Your 29+ Affinity Designer Motion Graphics Afdesign Assets

Getting your meticulously prepared vectors out of Affinity Designer and into your animation software requires choosing the right format. I usually test my exports across different tools to see what holds up best. Depending on whether you are animating in After Effects, Rive, or Lottie, the ideal export settings change.

Export FormatBest ForLimitations

Organizing 29+ Affinity Designer Motion Graphics Afdesign Layers

If you want your motion graphics pipeline to run without a hitch, you need strict layer hygiene. I always rename my layers before exporting, because whatever the layer is called in Designer will be the name of the shape layer in After Effects. This saves you from animating “Curve 14.”

  • Isolate your anchors: Set up your layers so the center of the bounding box aligns with the pivot point you need.
  • Avoid live booleans: Flatten your boolean groups before export to prevent broken paths in SVG.
  • Separate gradients: If you're exporting for Lottie, break complex gradients into separate solid layers.

⚠️ Note: Never rely on Affinity's live layer effects (like Outer Glow) if you plan to export to SVG for Lottie. These will rasterize or disappear entirely, breaking your vector animation.

Integrating Afdesign Files into a Motion Pipeline

This is where it gets interesting. You don’t actually need a plugin to bridge Affinity Designer with After Effects. By exporting a clean PSD with separate layers, you can use the “Import as Composition - Retain Layer Sizes” option in After Effects. Honestly, this single workflow shift cut my rigging time in half compared to my old Illustrator habit.

For UI motion graphics, exporting individual SVG layers and reconstructing them in a web environment or Lottie works remarkably well. Just keep your artboards organized. I typically use one artboard per asset state, which makes batch exporting a breeze through the Export Persona.

Prepping motion graphics in Affinity Designer is all about setting up your .afdesign files for the software that comes next. If you respect layer independence and understand export limitations, you can turn complex vector illustrations into highly responsive motion assets. Test your next export with these constraints in mind, and you’ll spend less time fixing broken paths and more time actually animating.
